Wild River is one of Elia Kazans most unknown works but among his finest a powerful and progressive drama set in depression era Tennessee that is both visually stunning and highly evocative breaking free from the directors more theatrically rigid approach to filmmaking.

It unfolds at a leisurely pace capturing the tempo of a Southern life which explodes only occasionally into bouts of violence or racial hysteria.
